Note: To be eligible for the minimum wage you must be above the school leaving age. In England and Wales this date is the last Friday of June in the school year that you turn 16. In Northern Ireland it is after 30th June that year. In Scotland if your 16th birthday is between 1st March and 30th September, you can leave after the 31st May that year, but if your birthday is between 1st October and the end of February, you can't leave until the start of the Christmas holidays in that school year.

Note: For minimum wage purposes an apprentice is a worker who has either a contract of apprenticeship with their employer or is taking part in one of the following Government apprenticeship programs. Trainees on these courses would normally have written agreements or contracts with their employer:

• Get Ready for Work, Skillseekers or Modern Apprenticeships (Scotland)
• Access, Jobskills Traineeships or Modern Apprenticeships (Northern Ireland)
