will I get paid for leave for urgent family reasons and other periods of special leave?

The Maternity and Parental Leave Regulations and the Employment Rights Act do not require employers to pay for parental leave or dependants' leave.

Some employers will pay part or all of wages for this type of leave. If they do, the arrangements will probably be set out in your contract of employment or in a staff handbook.
